Brown Teal

Brown Teal

Rocky Bay is home to a small population of native Brown Teal that live and breed on the property.

The brown teal is the largest and only flighted member of the three brown-plumaged teals endemic to the New Zealand region. In 2011, its population was estimated to be between 1500 and 2500 birds, but due to conservation efforts, the population is increasing. They are now mainly found in Northland, Great Barrier Island and Coromandel.
